Overview

First organized in the fall of 1991, 21-and-under is a support group for young people in the southwest.  Since its beginning, over 3000 young people have come to a meeting at one time or another. Meetings are informal, with usually 8-15 people present.

Discussions range far and wide, covering such topics as coming out to family and friends; handling difficult school situations; jobs; current events; and "everything else."  Special events such as picnics, dances, movies, and community service are held throughout the year.

Welcome!

Dear LesBiGay (or "questioning") Youth,

LAMBDA's Youth OUTreach is for those of you who are 21-and-under and are looking for a safe, comfortable place to hang out and talk.  You don't have to be gay or bi or whatever, and we don't ask -- although most of the group is either gay/lesbian, bisexual, or trying to understand their sexuality.  So whatever your reason for coming, you are always WELCOME!
Our weekly meetings are group discussion sessions and we'll discuss what ever the group wants to on any given evening.  In the past, we've had discussions that ranged from the latest music, AIDS, relationships, and finding friends to why, and how, some of us have tried to commit suicide.  Sometimes we watch videos with gay themes, or even have guest speakers.  We are not shy about topics and are very open-minded.  All of our members are fairly outspoken individuals and we encourage the same from new members.  Don't be afraid if you don't want to talk at first -- no one is going to force you.  We just want you to know that we are all experiencing many of the same feelings and experiences, and that we're here for you.  WE CARE!
On occasion, we have group activities (such as going to the movies or out to eat).  All of our activities are suggested by and followed through by the group.  The LAMBDA volunteers simply have to okay our plans and go with us.  This is OUR group, the over-21 volunteers are only there to supervise.  In other words, WE have to decide where our discussions go. It is important for youth members to understand that in order for us to have a youth group we all have to participate and show up on time.  It is not the facilitator's job to lead us around -- they simply make sure we think about how we want go about it.  EVERYTHING that gets done is done by youth volunteers.
The most important thing about the youth group is that it's a as safe a way to meet friends as I can think of.  We don't pressure people to do anything they don't want to.  We try to make everyone feel comfortable, and always enjoy getting new members.  So, if you're interested, drop by! You can also reach us on the Internet at www.lambda.org or send email to: youth@lambda.org.
I (and all of us in the group) hope to see you at our next meeting!

 Sincerely,

 Danny, 20

When does the 21-and-under group meet? Saturdays @ 4:30 p.m. (including holidays).

Where does the youth group meet? Can you tell me how to get to Ochoa St.?

The group meets at the GLBTF Community Center, 216 South Ochoa St., in downtown El Paso.  For a map, click here.

From I-10, take the Downtown exit and go to Kansas St. Turn on Kansas (south) and proceed about 9 blocks to Overland. Turn left and go 3 blocks to Ochoa. Turn right (you'll be going south again) onto Ochoa St. and we're 1/2 block on the left in the red brick building with white trim.

From Cd. Juarez, take the downtown bridge on Juarez Ave. Just follow the signs to El Paso. Proceed to north to Paisano and turn right. Go approximately 1/2 mile, passing Mesa St., Stanton St., Kansas St., and Campbell to Florence and turn left. (Note: You can't turn left on Ochoa St. -- it is a one-way street heading south.) Go one block (north) to First Ave and turn right. Proceed one block to Ochoa and the Community Center is the red brick building across the street on your left.

From the New OP, just cross the street. We're on the northeast corner of Ochoa and First Ave. (That one was easy, huh!)

Our parking lot is next to the building on the south and if it's full, you can park in front (but you'll have to pay the parking meter during the day).

See you here!
